A fuel delivery system for a direct injection internal combustion engine having two fuel rails and a plurality of fuel injectors attached to and fluidly connected with each fuel rail. A first fuel pump has its output connected with the first fuel rail while a second fuel pump has its output connected with the second fuel rail. A crossover pipe fluidly connects the outlets of both the first and second pumps. Both the first pump and the second pump each have an intake stroke and a pumping stroke. Furthermore, the intake stroke of the first pump coincides with the pumping stroke of the second pump and vice versa. |

1. A fuel injector for an internal combustion engine comprising:
an elongated body having an inlet end and an outlet end and a fluid passageway interconnecting the inlet end and the outlet end; a valve seat disposed across the outlet end of the body; a first valve movably mounted in the body between a closed position in which the first valve engages the valve seat and an open position in which the first valve separates from the valve seat; a second valve movably coaxially mounted and contained in the first valve between a closed position in which the second valve engages the valve seat and an open position in which the second valve separates from the valve seat; and a valve actuator for selectively moving the first valve and the second valve between their respective open and closed positions, said valve actuator including a plunger slidably mounted in a fluid passageway in said body which fluidly connects said inlet end of said body to said outlet end, said plunger having a plurality of through bores, wherein energization of the valve actuator with a first current moves the first valve to the open position while energization of the valve actuator with a second current less than the first current moves the second valve to the open position while leaving the first valve in the closed position. |
