Asphalt binder modifier composition

Asphalt binder modifiers derived from the thermo-catalytic conversion of biomass are provided. The asphalt binder modifiers are useful as anti-stripping agents and in increasing tensile strength ratios for asphalt concrete, asphalt-containing roofing materials, and other asphalt applications.

A water insoluble asphalt binder modifier, comprising a high molecular weight fraction of a biomass T-C oil having a boiling point of at least 343° C., wherein the high molecular weight fraction comprises a non-hydrotreated portion and a portion that has been at least partially hydrotreated, and wherein the high molecular weight fraction is produced by:
(a) heating a biomass in the presence of a catalyst at a temperature between 200 and 1000° C. to produce said biomass T-C oil; (b) separating said biomass T-C oil by a fractionation process into said high molecular weight fraction and a lower molecular weight fraction; (c) the at least partially hydrotreated portion of the high molecular weight fraction has an oxygen content less than about 10 wt %; and d) the non-hydrotreated portion of the high molecular weight fraction has an oxygen content less than about 20 wt %, wherein said water insoluble asphalt binder modifier comprises from about 2 weight percent to about 10 weight percent oxygen.
