The invention relates to a domestic appliance for treating objects, comprising a control device and an operating device designed as an external or internal touch screen (1), wherein the control device is designed to present a display field (2, 4, 6, 12, 18) on at least one part of the touch screen (1) within a screen display (1), in which display field at least one operating element (5, 10, 17, 19, 22) and at least one display element (3, 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, 16) for setting and displaying a control variable of the domestic appliance that can be set by touch are arranged, wherein (a) the at least one operating element (10, 17, 22) contains an elongate, two-dimensional sensor element (10, 17, 22) having a first segment (23) and at least two further segments (24), wherein a lowest value of the settable control variable or an OFF function for deactivating the control variable is associated with the first segment (23) and different values of the settable control variable are associated with the at least two further segments (24); and (b) the control device is designed to present at least two display elements (8, 9, 15, 16) after and/or at the same time as the sensor element (10, 17, 22) is touched, wherein the first display element (8, 15) displays the lowest settable value of the control variable or the OFF function and the second display element (9, 16) display the highest settable value of the control variable. The invention further relates to a method for operating said domestic appliance.
