PURPOSE: To provide an internal combustion engine having a valve timing control device which can optimumly correct a base combustion state control value required in an actual valve timing of a variable valve timing mechanism controlled through a target valve timing which is corrected according to a condition of an internal combustion engine. CONSTITUTION: An ECU 60 corrects a base target valve timing BASE based on a detected cooling water temperature THW of an engine 1 and a throttle opening TA. A variable valve timing mechanism 35 is controlled based on the corrected target valve timingθ. A base ignition timing SABASE is corrected based on difference between an actual valve timingθCAM of the variable valve timing mechanism 35 and the base target valve timing SABASE. Correction is performed from the base target valve timingθBASE after setting the base ignition timingθBASE. An ignition timing SA after correction is a proper value requested by the actual valve timingθCAM.
