PURPOSE:To obtain display of a high grade approximate to the display grade viewed from a front surface direction even when the display is viewed from a diagonal direction and to widen the visual field angle thereof by disposing a light shielding film corresponding to a non-display region on the inside surface of a front surface side substrate, by which the distance from the light shielding film to a reflection film is made shorter by as much as the thickness of the front surface side substrate. CONSTITUTION:At least the front surface side substrate 11 of a pair of the substrates 11, 12 of the light scattering type liquid crystal element is formed as a transparent substrate and the rear surface side substrate 12 is provided with the reflection film 16 for reflecting the light past a liquid crystal layer 15. The inside surface is provided with the light shielding film 17 corresponding to the nondisplayed region. The light shielding film 17 consists of an opaque insulating film of a black color system (a resin film contg. black pigments, etc.) and is formed to, for example, grid-shaped patterns opened in the parts corresponding to respective pixels. Since the light shielding film 17 is formed on the inside surface of the front surface side substrate 11, the distance from the light shielding film 17 to the reflection film 16 is made shorter by as much as the thickness of the front surface side substrate 11 as compared with the conventional liquid crystal elements. |
