This heater is provided with: an insulating substrate; a heat generating unit comprising two linear portions and a folded-back portion connecting together one of the ends of each of the two linear portions, the linear portions and the folded-back portion being embedded in the insulating substrate; two lead portions which are embedded in the insulating substrate, are positioned further to the other side than the two linear portions, and have cross sectional areas greater than the two linear portions; and two connecting portions which are embedded in the insulating substrate and which connect the heat generating unit to the lead portions. At least one of the connecting portions has a cross sectional shape which varies such that the cross sectional area thereof becomes greater from the heat generating unit toward the lead portion, with a greater rate of dimensional change in a direction perpendicular to the direction in which the two linear portions are arranged than in the direction in which the two linear portions are arranged. |
