This invention provides a fuel injection device comprising a nozzle body (4), an outer needle (6), an inner needle (7), actuators (8, 9), and a control unit (2), fuel injection being started and stopped by the tip of the outer needle being unseated from and seated on an inner wall (13) of the nozzle body; wherein the control unit selectively uses a first mode and a second mode in accordance with the state of the inner needle when the outer needle is unseated from the inner wall of the nozzle body and fuel is injected, the inner needle is moved from the lowest point of the movement range of the inner needle toward an axial-direction end in the first mode, the inner needle remains at the lowest point in the second mode, the control unit selectively uses the first mode and the second mode depending on the operating status of the engine including at least a command value for the fuel injection amount, and the command value for the injection amount is greater when the second mode is used than when the first mode is used. |
