A monitoring apparatus provides vehicle telematics data. The monitoring apparatus includes a sensor for sensing vehicle and engine motion induced vibration in part of a vehicle and for generating vibration associated data. The sensor is coupled to part of the vehicle. Engine motion induced vibration associated data is processed to extract a characteristic of the vehicle or the engine.

1. Monitoring apparatus for providing vehicle telematics data, the apparatus comprising:
means for sensing vehicle and engine motion induced vibration in part of a vehicle and for generating vibration associated data, the sensing means being adapted to be coupled to said part of said vehicle; means for processing said vehicle and engine motion induced vibration associated data to generate processed data representing at least one characteristic of said vehicle or engine; and means for communicating said processed data representing at least one characteristic of said vehicle or engine to a communication device for use in compiling telematics data for said vehicle; wherein the apparatus, by virtue of having a weight of less than 100 g, is sufficiently lightweight to allow the sensing means to sense said vehicle and engine motion induced vibration in said part of said vehicle with sufficient sensitivity for the processing means to detect, from said vehicle and engine motion induced vibration, at least one event affecting said vehicle, and to allow the apparatus to survive a typical vehicle collision.
