A watchdog timer updates a counter value at a given interval of time. A time monitoring unit (16) measures elapsed time from when a software module (10) commences executing a process, and repeatedly requests that the watchdog timer counter value be reset while the software module (10) is executing the process and the elapsed time from when the software module (10) commences executing the process does not reach a defined upper bound time. A watchdog timer clear unit (19) resets the watchdog timer counter value at each request from the time monitoring unit (16) for the watchdog timer counter value to be reset.
