N-acyl-peptides of formula (R2NHCHR1CO-Q) (I) and their carboxylic acid salts are new. (Where (a) R1 = H; R2 = CHO; Q = C-terminal Tyr, Gln, Cys or Ile; (b) R1 = Me; R2 = CHO; Q = C-terminal Val, Ile, Tyr, Gln or Cys; (c) R1 = H or Me; R2 = CH3CO; Q = C-terminal Ile, Gln or Cys; or (d) R1 = H or Me; R2 = acyl residue of a 3-6C mono- or dicarboxylic acid, with the exception of methacrylic acid and, when R1 is Me and Q is Ile, methylbutyric acid; Q = Val, Ile, Leu, Tyr, Gln or Cys). The use of N-acyl-peptides of formula R2NHCHR1'COQ (I') and their carboxylic acid salts as a source of C-terminal amino acids in mixts. or solns. for enteral or parenteral nutrition, or as nutrient media for cell cultures, is new.
