Extraction instruments and systems for use in revision arthroplasty are provided. The extraction instruments are shaped and configured to fit within the typically tight confines in which revision arthroplasty is performed, and to enhance the surgeon's control over the axis, quantum and speed of the force that is required be applied to disrupt a bone-to-prosthesis bond. This enables completion of a revision arthroplasty to proceed more quickly, and with reduced risk that unwanted movements might cause accidental injury to nearby vital structures.

1. An orthopedic extraction instrument for use in revision arthroplasty of a prosthetic component, the extraction instrument comprising:
an elongate shaft having a proximal end and a distal end; a pivot edge formed at or near the distal end of the shaft and having a face with a plane directed outwardly with respect to the distal end of the shaft at substantially a right angle to a longitudinal axis of the elongate shaft; an elongate extraction blade extending outwardly from said face of said pivot edge substantially at a right angle with respect to said plane and in a distal direction with respect to said shaft, the elongate extraction blade having at least one cutting edge disposed along at least one lateral edge thereof, said face of said pivot edge being operable to engage a surface feature of the prosthetic component to facilitate lateral pivoting movement of the elongate shaft about the face of the pivot edge causing a lateral cutting action by said cutting edge.
