PURPOSE:To prevent roughing of conical surfaces of pulleys, by inhibiting a pillar portion of a belt element to be brought into contact with an edge surface of a carrier belt at a Vmax. CONSTITUTION:An initial value is determined such that an amount of misalignment DELTAX produced at center lines of groove widths of a driving side pulley 4 and a driven side pulley 6 is approximately zero at a pulley ratio Top wherein a maximum speed of a belt 11 is achieved. In addition, relative positions of the center of the groove width of the driving side pulley 16 and the center of the groove width of the drive side pulley 6 are biased by the value initially set in accordance with a shift change ratio. With the arrangement, roughing of conical surfaces of the pulleys can be prevented.
