PURPOSE:To make an illuminating part thin and attain uniform illumination by sticking a light diffusing film to a fluorescent discharge tube and arranging a reflecting plate on one side of the fluorescent discharge tube and arranging a diffusing plate on the side including the reflecting plate and the fluorescent discharge tube and arranging a transmission type liquid crystal element on the diffusing plate. CONSTITUTION:A pattern diffusing film 8 having the light diffusing effect is formed in meshes or square dots on the surface of a fluorescent discharge tube 2, and approximate the fluorescent discharge tube 2 to the display surface side as much as possible. A transmission type liquid crystal display element 1 is illuminated from behind by an illuminating light source day and night. The fluorescent discharge tube 2 is used as the illuminating light source, and a milk white acrylic plate is used as a light diffusing transmission plate 3 which diffuses the light of this light source to illuminate the transmission type liquid crystal display element 1. A reflecting plate 44 which reflects the light from the fluorescent discharge tube 2 to lead it to the surface of all areas of the light diffusing transmission plate 3 is provided at the rear of the fluorescent discharge tube 2, and the reflecting surface of this plate 44 is made from an aluminum plate or a resin plate coated with a white paint. Thus, the liquid crystal display surface is uniformly illuminated by the thin device.
