PURPOSE:To produce a polybutadiene having high 1,2-structure and cis-1,4-structure contents, excellent in rubber properties, and useful as a rubber material for tire treads, by polymerizing 1,3-butadine in the presence of a specified catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A polybutadiene having a 1,2-sturucture content of 7-50%, a cis-1,4-structure content >=50%, a trans-1,4-structure content <=2% and an intrinsic viscosity eta (in toluene at 30 deg.C) >=1 is produced by polymerizing 1,3-butadiene in the presence of a catalyst system comprising a dithiocarbamic acid compound (e.g., cobalt dimethyldithiocarbamate), a halogen-containing organoaluminum compound (e.g., diethylaluminum monochloride) and water. This polybutadiene is useful as, for example, tire treads, and a styrene resin obtained from this polybutadiene and a styrene monomer is excellent, particularly in impact resistance.
