Non-ionic surface-active agents of the formula are disclosed: (I) in which a=0 or 1, R denotes a C8-C30 aliphatic or alicyclic radical, x+y totals a number from 1 to 10 and, in each unit, one of Z1 and Z2 denotes hydrogen and the other denotes the radical in which R1 denotes methyl or ethyl. These products can be prepared simply and are suitable for use in cosmetic or pharmaceutical compositions and in particular in cosmetic compositions for treating the hair or skin.
