A porous, open-pored, gas-permeable alpha-silicon carbide (SiC) containing shaped body comprising: platelet-shaped crystallites connected to form an interconnected, continuous skeletal structure, wherein the skeletal structure consists of more than 80 wt-% alpha-SiC, relative to the total weight of SiC, the porous, open-pored, gas-permeable alpha-silicon carbide (SiC) containing shaped body having an average pore diameter of 3 μm to 50 μm and an open porosity of 45% to 85% vol.-%, relative to a total volume of the porous, open-pored, gas-permeable alpha-silicon carbide (SiC) containing shaped body; and wherein the average pore diameter of the porous, open-pored, gas-permeable alpha-silicon carbide (SiC) containing shaped body is greater than a size of the platelet-shaped crystallites and greater than an average thickness of pore walls constructed from said platelet-shaped crystallites.
