Illuminated suction apparatus

An illuminated suction apparatus including a hand-held surgical device combining a high-performance illumination waveguide with suction. This device would be useful in a wide array of various surgical procedures including open and minimally invasive orthopedics.

1. An illuminated surgical device, said device comprising:
a tube having a proximal portion and a distal portion, and an inner surface and an outer surface; first optical cladding at least partially circumferentially disposed around the outer surface of the tube; and a crescent-shaped non-fiber optic optical waveguide having a proximal portion, a distal portion, a cross-sectional area, and an outer peripheral surface, a first portion of the outer peripheral surface having a convex shape and a second portion of the outer peripheral surface having a concave shape, wherein the second portion of the outer peripheral surface is disposed at least partially circumferentially around the tube such that the first optical cladding is disposed therebetween; wherein light is transmitted through the optical waveguide by total internal reflection; wherein the first optical cladding preserves total internal reflection in the optical waveguide; and wherein the optical waveguide at least partially circumferentially illuminates around the tube.
