Oil is purified by treatment with a mixture of carbonaceous material, for example sawdust, and water-absorbing chemicals, such as sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid or a mixture of these acids. Excess water-absorbing material may be neutralized, for example by means of caustic soda, before or after the mixture is added to the oil. An example is described of the treatment of paraffin with a mixture of wood meal and sulphuric acid, the oil being afterwards filtered and then treated with fuller's earth.
