A method of separating platinum and rhenium comprising the steps of: contacting a liquid comprising platinum and rhenium and a chelating ion exchange resin; and adsorbing the platinum onto the chelating ion exchange resin, further comprising, prior to the step of contacting the liquid comprising platinum and rhenium and a chelating ion exchange resin, the steps of: digesting an alloy feed comprising platinum and rhenium in a complexing ligand comprising halides in an amount sufficient to complex the platinum present in the alloy feed; and separating resulting solids from the liquid comprising platinum and rhenium, wherein a concentration of rhenium and/or platinum in the resulting solids is from 50 to 100% lower than a concentration of rhenium and/or platinum in the alloy feed, the method further comprising, following the step of contacting the liquid comprising platinum and rhenium and a chelating ion exchange resin, obtaining a liquid stream comprising a higher relative concentration of rhenium to platinum than a relative concentration of rhenium to platinum in the liquid comprising platinum and rhenium.
