1. A method to increase the damping of a substrate, comprising:
a) creating a face-centered cubic damping material ingot comprising a face-centered cubic damping material; b) placing the face-centered cubic damping material ingot and the substrate in a vacuum chamber; c) heating the substrate to a first layer temperature; d) forming a vapor from the face-centered cubic damping material ingot; e) condensing the vapor on a surface of the substrate to create a first layer face-centered cubic ferromagnetic damping coating having a first grain size on the surface of the substrate; f) heating the substrate and the first layer face-centered cubic ferromagnetic damping coating to a second layer temperature that is at least 25 degrees Celsius greater than the first layer temperature; and g) condensing the vapor on at least a portion of the first layer face-centered cubic ferromagnetic damping coating to create a second layer face-centered cubic ferromagnetic damping coating having a second grain size different than the first grain size, resulted in a coated substrate. |
