Feeding w e b s.- Cardboard boxes are made by positioning a main blank a, Fig. 2, which forms the bottom and two ends of the box, and two smaller blanks b, each of which forms a side of the box, on a horizontal table with the blanks b centrally at the commencement of its forward movement to prevent the forward ends of the strips from contacting with the blanks and at the end of its movement. The strips are released and clamped on to the blanks on the machine bed by the grippers 79, the slides 80 having been raised to allow the strips to pass under the grippers 79, and then allowed to fall by gravity. Rollers 90 carried by levers 88 press the strips on to the blanks during the return movement of the slide 62, and these rollers are lifted as the ends of the strips approach the grippers 79 by rollers 89 on the levers 88 engaging wedges on the slides 80. Specification 227,563 is referred to. arranged with respect to the opposite longitudinal edges of the blank a, and then attaching a pair of adhesive strips c to the adjacent edges of the blanks so that portions of the strips overhang the edges of the blank a, these overhanging portions being subsequently caused to adhere to the side blanks when the assembly is folded into box form. The strips c are drawn from coils on standards 50, Fig. 5, moistened by passing over a roller 55, Fig. 8, disposed in a water bath 56, and guided over rollers 57, 58 to allow the ad. hesive to become tacky before passing beneath rollers 59 co-operating with weighted or spring- controlled gripping-members 60 on a reciprocating slide 62, Fig. 7. The forward ends of the strips are supported on blades 61 and are carried by the slide 62 over the blanks to grippers 79 carried by slides 80; the slide 62 is slightly raised |
