Inlaid linoleum.-Inlaid linoleum is made bv assembling inlays of linoleum composition upon a plastic and adhesive base layer of composition, spaces being left between adjacent inlays, and consolidating the whole so as to embed the inlays partly in the base layer while maintaining the spaces between the inlays. The invention is particularly applicable to tile-pattern linoleum. A relatively thick layer 2, Fig. 1, of linoleum composition is applied to a backing 1 in the usual manner, its colour being chosen to represent the mortar between the tiles. The base layer may be partly cured or seasoned. The tile pattern is then formed by assembling blocks or tesserae 3, 4, cut from unseasoned sheets of composition, preferably of less thickness than the base layer. Spaces are left between the blocks to show the base layer. The linoleum is then subjected to heavy pressure to unite the tesserae with the base layer and to cause the edges 8 of the former to be rounded as shown in Fig. 3. Pressure may be applied by a smooth roll or by a ribbed roll or plate of which the ribs coincide with the channels or depressed parts of the finished linoleum. |
