1. A composite material comprising
at least 65% by volume aluminum oxide as a ceramic matrix; from 10 to 35% by volume zirconium oxide particles dispersed in said ceramic matrix; a dispersoid phase in the form of platelets, and <0.2 mol % of a chemical stabilizer relative to the zirconium oxide content; wherein, based on the total zirconium oxide content, 80 to 99% of said zirconium oxide is present in the tetragonal phase; wherein the zirconium oxide particles have an average grain size of from 0.1 to 0.5 μm; wherein the chemical stabilizer is selected from the group consisting of Y2O3, CeO2, CaO and MgO; and wherein the platelets of the dispersoid phase enable inelastic micro deformation. |
