Pump assemblies and methods for operating pump assemblies of appliances are provided. A method includes actuating a motor of the pump assembly to begin operation of a pump of the pump assembly, receiving an electrical signal level between a first electrical contact and a second electrical contact provided for sensing fluid flow through the pump, and deactuating the motor when the electrical signal level falls outside of a predetermined electrical signal range.

1. A pump assembly for an appliance, the pump assembly comprising:
a pump, the pump comprising a body and an impeller disposed within the body, the body comprising an inlet portion, an outlet portion, and an impeller portion disposed between the inlet portion and the outlet portion; a motor connected to the impeller for driving the impeller; a sensor assembly for sensing fluid flow through the pump, the sensor assembly comprising a first electrical contact and a second electrical contact in electrical communication with each other; and a controller in communication with the sensor assembly and the motor, the controller configured for:
actuating the motor to begin operation of the pump;receiving an electrical signal level between the first electrical contact and the second electrical contact; anddeactuating the motor when the electrical signal level falls outside of a predetermined electrical signal range.
