Vacuum tubes; lowpressure metallicvapour apparatus.- A lighting tube is divided by one or more longitudinal partitions b, Fig. 4, the chambers c, d thus formed being filled with different gases or vapours so as to provide various lighting effects according as one or more of chambers are connected in circuit. For example, when the chamber d in front of the observer contains a mixture of argon and mercury, with or without neon, and the chamber c contains neon and a discharge is passed through both chambers, the radiation shows a central lilac strip e, two blue strips g, and two red strips f. When the position of the tube is reversed or the partition is mounted in the direction of vision other arrangements of the colours are produced. A tube with three chambers has three radial partitions, and the third chamber may contain nitrogen or carbonic acid gas -producing a yellow or white discharge. Sections m, p, Fig. 9, of partitioned tubes may be joined by single chambered tubes n, o. A script sign may be formed by arranging the tubes n, o out of sight, for example, behind the sign; or the light from the tubes n1 o may be used, for example by forming them as the corners of a frame. |
