Projection display providing additional modulation and related methods

A projection display system includes a spatial modulator that is controlled to compensate for flare in a lens of the projector. The spatial modulator increases achievable intra-frame contrast and facilitates increased peak luminance without unacceptable black levels. Some embodiments provide 3D projection systems in which the spatial modulator is combined with a polarization control panel.

1. A projector, comprising:
a modulation device configured to produce a modulated light; a subsequent modulation device positioned to be illuminated by the modulated light and configured to further spatially modulate the modulated light; wherein the subsequent modulation device comprises a combined spatial modulator and polarization controller; wherein the controller comprises a Point Spread Function (PSF) model and lens model and configured to estimate a distribution of light comprising darkened and lighter areas incident on the subsequent modulation device according to the PSF and lens models and use the estimated distribution and image data to energize the subsequent modulation device; and wherein the controller energizes the subsequent modulation device to compensate for a lensing artifact contained the distribution of light on the subsequent modulator.
