A method of culturing cells, the method comprising: providing an active collagen matrix obtained from a mammalian tissue, wherein the active collagen matrix contains growth factors native to the collagen in the mammalian tissue; obtaining a cell population from a species of mammal, wherein the species of mammal for the cell population is the same species as the mammalian tissue; providing a cell culture media capable of supporting proliferation of the cell population; culturing the cell population with the active collagen matrix; and increasing the proliferation rate of the cell population.
