[Class 80 (ii)] Control mechanism for pressure-medium servo-operated preselective change-speed gearing 10, Fig. 1, comprises a valve 22 opened by a vehicle accelerator pedal 7 to admit pressure air (or suction) to a branch conduit 1 which air opens a valve 32 admitting pressure air from another branch conduit 4 to effect a speed change preselected by a lever 13. The lever 13 turns a selector valve, not shown, to preselect, and the change is effected when a main valve 23 is opened by the pressure air in the conduit 4 so that air from a reservoir 6 shoots directly down still another conduit 2 into the box 10 and through the selector valve to executive pistons, not shown. The air which passes the valve 22 opens the valve 32 by pressing on a piston 31. Air which passes the valve 32 opens the valve 23 by pressing on a piston 24. The change-speed gear envisaged is one with repelling clutch teeth according to Specification 298,186, [Class 80 (ii)], and until the clutch teeth have engaged fully, a piston 33 is kept raised so that the main valve 23 is held open. A cam disc 17 carried by the selector lever 13 opens a valve 29 admitting air to the conduit 4, and also a valve 25 allowing air to pass on to a valve 26 adapted also to be opened by the accelerator 7 to pass to a clutch-controlling conduit 3 and to a servomotor 11 to engage an engine clutch 11<1>. In a form shown in Fig. 2, the air admitted by opening the valve 22 by the accelerator 7 in addition to opening the valve 32 as described, opens also a valve 52 admitting air from another conduit 53 ultimately to engage the engine clutch 11<1>. In the clutch-controlling conduit 3 is a stop valve 38 opened by an engine-driven governor 37. Specification 369,864 also is referred to.</p> |
