Vaporizers, external.-A vaporizing-device for effecting a catalytic decomposition or cracking of liquid fuel, particularly for use on motor vehicles, comprises a vaporizing chamber 5, Figs. 1 and 2, constructed of a material which will produce the required reaction. The rear wall of the chamber 5 is provided with fins 20 which project into a passage through which the exhaust gases, or a proportion thereof, are conducted. A rich mixture, with or without the addition of exhaust gas, is produced in the lower portion of the chamber 5 and is drawn up by the engine suction through a number of sinuous passages, the catalyzed mixture passing through a Venturi 6 to a mixing chamber to which secondary air is admitted by a control valve 9, the combustible mixture passing to the engine through a manifold 16. A suction-actuated valve 7 automatically admits additional air to the mixing chamber. The exhaust gases entering at 17 may be bye-passed through a conduit controlled by a throttle 13 to vary the heating of the catalyzing chamber 5. A mixture-controlling throttle 11 is connected to the throttle 13 to provide simultaneous control. Catalysis is stated to take place on both sides of the heated, partition wall, the effect, on the exhaust gases being to render them innocuous. Fig. 6 shows a modified form of catalyzing chamber in which a rich mixture is sprayed by the engine suction or a pump on to the lower portion of a corrugated partition wall. Sinuous passages 22 are formed in the upper portion by projecting ribs which are heated by conduction only. In each construction the front wall of the catalyzing chamber is formed by a detachable heat-insulated lid 14. In place of the mixing chamber arrangement shown in Fig. 1, a series of convergentdivergent atomizers 24, 25. 26, Fig. 7, may be employed, the catalyzed rich mixture. issuing from perforations in the throats of the Venturi passage to mix with the secondary air drawn through the concentric annular spaces 28 29 and a central orifice 27.
