Mass spectrometry systems or assemblies therefore include an ionizer that includes at least one planar conductor, a mass analyzer with a planar electrode assembly, and a detector comprising at least one planar conductor. The ionizer, the mass analyzer and the detector are attached together in a compact stack assembly. The stack assembly has a perimeter that bounds an area that is between about 0.01 mm2 to about 25 cm2 and the stack assembly has a thickness that is between about 0.1 mm to about 25 mm. |

1. A mass spectrometry apparatus formed as a stacked layer assembly, comprising:
an ionizer comprising a planar electrode layer; a mass analyzer comprising a first endcap layer, a first insulating layer, a central electrode layer, a second insulating layer, and a second endcap layer; and a detector comprising a second planar electrode layer, wherein the central electrode layer comprises a plurality of apertures having a maximum dimension 2r0; wherein the first and second insulating layers each comprise apertures having a maximum dimension larger than 2r0; and wherein the ionizer, the mass analyzer and the detector are attached together to form the stacked layer assembly with a thickness of the stacked layer assembly between 0.1 mm and 25 mm. |
