A method comprising: accessing, from a memory, predefined spatial mapping matrices useful for transmitting packets to a receiver; assigning, from the predefined spatial mapping matrices, a first of the predefined spatial mapping matrices to a predetermined number of packets; transmitting, using the first predefined spatial mapping matrix, the predetermined number of packets to the receiver; receiving, from the receiver, an indication of a packet error rate or a data rate associated with the predetermined number of packets; comparing the packet error rate or the data rate associated with the predetermined number of packets to a respective predefined reception quality metric threshold; assigning, from the predefined spatial mapping matrices and in response to the packet error rate or the data rate failing to meet the respective predefined reception quality metric threshold, a second of the spatial mapping matrices to additional packets; and transmitting, using the second predefined spatial mapping matrix, the additional packets to the receiver.
