In one or more aspects data packets are iteratively transmitted to a receiver using predefined spatial mapping matrices, channel estimates are received from the receiver responsive to iteratively transmitted data packets, and one of the predefined spatial mapping matrices is selected for transmitting additional data packets to the receiver based on the received channel estimates.

1. A method comprising:
accessing, from a memory, predefined spatial mapping matrices useful for transmitting packets to a receiver; assigning, from the predefined spatial mapping matrices, a first of the predefined spatial mapping matrices to a predetermined number of packets; transmitting, using the first predefined spatial mapping matrix, the predetermined number of packets to the receiver; receiving, from the receiver, an indication of a packet error rate or a data rate associated with the predetermined number of packets; comparing the packet error rate or the data rate associated with the predetermined number of packets to a respective predefined reception quality metric threshold; assigning, from the predefined spatial mapping matrices and in response to the packet error rate or the data rate failing to meet the respective predefined reception quality metric threshold, a second of the spatial mapping matrices to additional packets; and transmitting, using the second predefined spatial mapping matrix, the additional packets to the receiver.
