The present invention provides compositions and methods for treating, preventing, and inhibiting viral replication, viral infections and viral diseases and disorders, comprising the use of artemisinin derivatives having anti-viral activity.

A method of treating a viral infection or suppressing viral replication comprising the step of administering to a subject a pharmaceutical composition comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier or excipient and a therapeutically effective amount of a compound having anti-viral activity represented by the structure of formula I: or a salt or a solvate thereof, wherein Y represents a group —NR1R2; wherein R1 and R2 together with the interjacent nitrogen atom represent a non-aromatic heterocyclic group selected from the group consisting of piperazinyl, morpholinyl, thiomorpholinyl, and morpholinosulphonyl, and wherein said viral infection or replication is a herpesvirus infection or replication.
