A temperature measurement device 2 comprising a base 14, a plate 16, and a temperature sensor 22. The base 14 is more thermally insulating than the plate 16. The plate is disposed on top of the base. The temperature sensor or thermocouple is coupled to the first surface of the plate such that it measures a temperature of the plate. The plate may have a high emissivity value of at least 0.8, 0.9 or 0.95, and may be made of metal coated with a black paint. The base may be made of plastic. The device may be used to measure the temperature of an object such as an aircraft or aeroplane, wherein the emissivity of the plate is greater than or equal to the emissivity of the aircraft. A measurement taken by the temperature sensor may be compared to a predetermined threshold temperature and provide an output as an indication of whether or not the aircraft should be removed from the environment. The device allows accurate prediction of the temperature of external aircraft skin which may be lower than the air temperature of the environment due to radiative heat losses to the night sky. |
