348,031. Attaching bottoms to paper &c. cartons. CHATWIN, Ltd., T. and WILSON, C. J., Victoria Works, Gt. Tindal Street, Birmingham. Feb. 4, 1930, No. 3702. [Classes 18 and 66.] The flange c<1>, Fig. 3, of the dished bottom c of a paper or like carton for milk &c. is interlocked with the shouldered portion a<1> of the body portion by forming in the bottom flange a series of outwardly displaced teeth f, tapering from the attached root portions, which become embedded in cavities a3 which are simultaneously produced in the body wall. The operation is performed with the carton body placed in a die b, Fig. 1, the bottom being arranged over it as a flat blank which is given dished form and socketed into the body by the descent of a male die d. The plunger incorporates a series of radially disposed slides e, Fig. 1, provided with cutting edges at the outer extremities and inclined faces e<1> at the inner ends ; these slides are forced outwardly, by the subsequent descent of a conical-ended plunger g, to form the teeth f and effect the interlocking engagement of the parts. After the die is withdrawn the carton edge is rolled over the flange c<1>. The die d may be electrically or otherwise heated to assist the running of the wax coating into the interstices. According to the Provisional Specification, levers fulcrumed near the rim of the die d are furnished with toothed extension pieces which are displaced outwardly, to effect the formation of the teeth by angular displacement of the levers, timed to occur after the dishing and socketing of the bottom in position.
