A direct injection diesel engine (1) is provided with a fuel injection nozzle (7) which is capable of performing a multistage injection. In a middle-or-high load region, in order to reduce soot, an after-injection is performed immediately after a main injection. An injection timing of the after-injection is set from a map in accordance with a driving condition (step 1).
