Performing a fragmentation assessment of a material (e.g. rock, wood chips, aggregate) including fragmented portions comprises receiving (222) two dimensional (2D) image data representing a region of interest (RoI) of the material, and processing (224) the image to identify features of the fragmented portions, e.g. identifying boundaries. Three dimensional (3D) point locations on surfaces of the fragmented portions within the RoI are received (226), and locations within the 3D point locations that correspond to identified features in the 2D image are identified (228). These identified locations are used (230) to determine dimensional attributes (e.g. scale, volume, size) of the fragmented portions. The 3D point locations may be received from a sensor generating a 3D point cloud of the RoI. A distance may be determined between the 3D sensor and a reference 3D point location within the RoI. An orientation of the 3D point locations may be determined, and the point cloud may be processed to determine slope attributes, e.g. slope angle or slope height. A warning may be issued when the 3D sensor (i.e. user) approaches too close to a reference point in the RoI or a determined slope stability is too low. |
