A control system for a flywheel assembly 12, comprising a rotor 19, includes a plurality of sensors 13 each arranged to detect rotational motion of the rotor and to provide a motion signal indicative of the rotational motion. A controller 14 derives a rotational speed and position of the rotor and provides switching signals to an inverter coupled to a plurality of coils of the stator. The relative positions of the magnetic field induced in the coils of the stator and the field of the magnetic rotor when the rotor is rotating are aligned for torque transfer to and from the rotor by the switching signals. The flywheel rotor and the sensors may be positioned within a vacuum. The flywheel rotor may initially be accelerated from a rest position to a predetermined first rotational speed by providing the switching signals based only on the position of the rotor. |
