The invention discloses a method for determining and/or tracking the spatial distribution of an acoustic impedance within a given volume of water, wherein during an individual detection cycle, at least one of a plurality of sound generators distributed within the volume of water, emits a sound signal pulse at a specific emission time each sound signal pulse is transmitted through the volume of water and is received after its transmission by at least one of a plurality of sound receivers distributed within the volume of water, each of said sound receivers generating an output signal, and a time-resolved response function to the emitted signal pulses is derived from the output signals generated by the sound receivers, the spatial resolution of the response function being given by the distribution of the said sound receivers. Furthermore, the response function is evaluated, taking into account the emission time of each sound signal pulse, in order to determine the position within the volume of water of at least one of an object, a suspension and a fluid, said object, suspension and/or fluid having an acoustic impedance different than the water in the volume of water. |
