The invention relates to a detection method in which, in the time interval between two regenerations, a list is made of the number of points for measuring the amount of reducing agent estimated outside of a range around the target amount, the estimated amounts being measured depending on the NO2 content at the output of the SCR system, the percentage of the number of measurement points outside of the range relative to the total number of measurement points is then determined ; if said percentage exceeds a maximum percentage, the cause of the malfunction of the SCR system is sought, the search being carried out after regenerating the FAP (6) and consisting of comparing measurement points selected before and after regeneration, and, if the estimated amounts before and after regeneration are the same, the target amounts are updated in order to reduce the number of measurement points outside the range. |
