A system (5) for operating a gate arm of a railroad crossing gate (15) is provided. The system (5) includes a lever (35), a spring (40) attached to an extendable gate arm (10), a cable mechanism (45) including a cable (50) and a crossing mechanism (55). The lever (35) is movably coupled to the cable (50) and the spring (40) is coupled to the cable (50). The lever (35) is coupled to the crossing mechanism (55) and the cable (50) is coupled to the crossing mechanism (55). The cable mechanism (45) is configured to extend and retract the extendable gate arm (10) and the lever (35) is configured to enable the spring (40) to pull the extendable arm (10) out from a retracted position.
