Provided is a permanent magnet unit in which an insulating layer is disposed at a position at which eddy currents can be most effectively reduced. The permanent magnet unit includes at least one insulating layer and a plurality of permanent magnet pieces disposed adjacent to each other, with the insulating layer(s) interposed therebetween. The insulating layer(s) are disposed at a position determined on the basis of the magnitude of the eddy current flowing in a permanent magnet in association with variations in the magnetic field of the permanent magnet, the permanent magnet being obtained by integrally forming the permanent magnet pieces without the insulating layer(s) being interposed therebetween.
