A carbon separator for a solid polymer fuel battery, provided with a carbon layer and a core material made of steel. The steel has a chemical composition of, by mass, over 0.02% and up to 0.12% of C, 0.05 to 1.5% of Si, 0.001 to 1.0% of Al, 0.01 to 1.0% of Mn, 0.045% or less of P, 0.01% or less of S, 0.06% or less of N, 0.5% or less of V, over 13.0% and less than 25.0% of Cr, 0 to 2.5% of Mo, 0 to 0.8% of Ni, 0 to 0.8% of Cu, 0 to 0.1% of REM, 0 to 1.0% of B, 0 to 2.5% of Sn, and 0 to 0.1% of In, with the remainder made up by Fe and impurities. The separator has, in the steel, a finely dispersion-precipitated precipitate including a M23C6-type Cr-based carbide. Some of the precipitate projects from the steel surface. |
