The invention relates to an internal combustion engine having an even number of cylinders and having an exhaust-gas turbocharger with two at least substantially mutually separate turbine inlets (T1, T2). Each of the cylinders is assigned the following: – at least one inlet duct (EK1; EK2) which is provided for an admission of combustion air into a combustion chamber of the cylinder and which has a combustion chamber-side inlet opening (E1; E2), – a first outlet duct (AK1) which is provided for a discharge of exhaust gas out of the combustion chamber of the cylinder and which has a combustion chamber-side first outlet opening (A1), and – a second outlet duct (AK2) which is provided for a discharge of exhaust gas out of the combustion chamber of the cylinder and which has a combustion chamber-side second outlet opening (A2). A first half of the cylinders is connected by way of a respective first outlet duct (AK1) to a first of the two turbine inlets (T1, T2) and by way of a respective second outlet duct (AK2) to a second of the two turbine inlets (T1, T2). A second half of the cylinders is connected by way of a respective first outlet duct (AK1) to the second turbine inlet (T2) and by way of a respective second outlet duct (AK2) to the first turbine inlet (T1). According to the invention, the second outlet openings (A2) have a larger diameter than the first outlet openings (A1). In an operating method for the internal combustion engine according to the invention, at low engine speeds below a predefined lower engine speed threshold, the first outlet openings (A1) or the second outlet openings (A2) are permanently closed by outlet valves respectively assigned thereto. |
