A contact lens 2 is provided which may afford alleviation of age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). The contact lens possesses one or more prismatically active surfaces 4A, 4B, 4X which deflect light incident thereon away from a central region of the macula of said eye. The active surfaces may act in combination with non- active surfaces, the surface of the eye or a meniscal surface of ocular fluid to deflect light. The active surfaces may be discrete and distinguishable from the arcuate interior 6 or exterior 4 surface of the contact lens. The active surfaces may form an integral part of the interior or exterior of the contact lens. The contact lens may have embedded one or more prismatically active structures which themselves possess one or more prismatically active surfaces which produce the desired light deflecting effect. The prismatically active surfaces may be exclusively on the one or more prismatically active structures. The active structures may be surface mounted to one or both of the interior and exterior surfaces of the contact lens. The active structures may be substantially laminar and either adhered or fused to either the interior or exterior of the contact lens. |
