Processing a data stream at a portable device, where for at least one Region of Interest (ROI) in images of the data stream, a test based on at least one predetermined criterion is performed to decide whether to process data representing said ROI locally. After this test, a processed data stream is generated comprising the data representing said ROI if the test is negative, and output data of the local processing of the data representing said ROI if the test is positive. The processed data stream may also comprise data representing a region outside of the region of interest. The predetermined criterion may be the processing complexity of the data representing the region of interest which would be based on the size, rotation angle or illumination of the region of interest. The predetermined criterion may be based on available network resources. Also disclosed is receiving a data stream comprising non-processed data representing ROIs, processed data and description data for distinguishing and extracting the processed and non-processed data. The non-processed data is processed to obtain second processed data. Virtual images are then generated based on both sets of processed data.
