[Class 122 (ii).] Rotary distributing valves ; Expansion valves.-In a uniflow engine, steam is supplied to each end of the cylinder 1 by pairs of cylindrical, concentrically arranged and uniformly rotating valve 13, 15, 16, 17 through which steam flows radially through diametrically opposed slots which are relatively angularly adjusted to vary the admission. The outer valves 13, 17 are connected to a sleeve 8 which surrounds and is driven by a rotary shaft 7. The inner valves 15, 16 are connected by a sleeve 14 which is relatively rotated with respect to the sleeve 8 by a sleeve 26 engaging a spiral groove 27 thereon and operated by an arm 38 in a shaft 39. Similarly the sleeve 8 is rotated relative to the shaft 7 for reversal. The inlet of steam to and outlet from the valves take place through packing sleeves 31, 36, 31<1>, 36<1>. The passage 37 communicates with the cylinder.
