The method involves selecting a thread that is stored in a volatile memory (50) of a portable data carrier (10) based on a priority assigned to the thread, where the data carrier includes a multithreading-enabled operating system (42). The priority of the thread is changed during a period of the thread. The operating system is provided with a memory management unit (44). Pageable objects of the thread are determined. One of the determined objects of the thread in a persistent memory (60) i.e. flash memory, of the data carrier is swapped.
