Ethylene is absorbed at elevated pressures and temperatures in aqueous sulphuric acid of 50-80 per cent strength. Ethylene or mixtures rich in ethylene, such as the gas mixtures obtained by cracking hydrocarbon oils, may be used, and it is preferred to work at temperatures and pressures not higher than 200 DEG C. and 250 atmospheres respectively. Catalysts such as silver sulphate may be employed. Examples are given describing the production of conversion products containing both alcohol and ether, the proportion of ether obtained increasing with the temperature at which the ethylene is absorbed. |
