<PICT:0363692/IV/1> In applying stretch to artificial thread by methods involving the passage of the thread one or more times around a wheel, the thread is displaced laterally on the wheel by means of a guide comprising a smooth roller, preferably tapered. The roller may be associated with a housing designed to catch coagulating liquid thrown off by the thread. As shown, the thread 2 coming from the coagulating bath passes in turn behind a post guide 21, around a wheel 1, around a roller 4, again around the wheel 1, and finally into a funnel 31 leading to a spinning bucket. The roller 4 has a smooth uniform surface and is mounted freely on an axle 5. A housing 10 is associated with the roller 4, and is provided with ribs which direct the spray caught by the housing on to the axle 5, which is thus lubricated, the liquid being ultimately returned to the coagulating bath through a conduit 17. The block 12 to which the housing 10 is secured may be provided with a recess 20 to receive drippings from the wheel 1 and guide 21. A modified construction of the housing 10 is described, Fig. 4 (not shown), in which the post guide 21 is secured directly to the housing, and the drippings from the wheel 1 are used to lubricate the axle 5. The post guide 21 may be dispensed with if the thread is first run horizontally on to the wheel 1.
