Provided is a heavy duty pneumatic tire having both chipping resistance and heat resistance. This heavy duty pneumatic tire is provided with a tread (6) having a tread pattern including: a pair of circumferential primary grooves (15, 17) formed in a wave shape and extending in the circumferential direction of the tire; center lug grooves (14); center blocks (21); and circumferential secondary grooves (23) extending in the regions of the center blocks (21) and open to the center lug grooves (14). Each of the center lug grooves (14) has two groove bends (14a, 14b) bent in an angled shape or a curved shape. The circumferential secondary grooves (23) extend tilted relative to the circumferential direction of the tire. The angle (θ4) of tilt of the circumferential secondary grooves (23) relative to the circumferential direction of the tire is different from the angle (θ1) of tilt of portions of the circumferential primary grooves (23) relative to the circumferential direction of the tire, the portions extending toward the same side as the side, in the width direction of the tire, toward which the circumferential secondary grooves (23) are tilted.
